meet erin smith

Erin Smith was born and raised and continues to live in Plattsmouth on a small acreage with her husband Dustin, their daughter Vaeda, and son Conroy.  At seven years of age, Erin knew she wanted to become a nurse. She attended St. John the Baptist school up until 8th grade, then commuted to Omaha to attend high school at Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart.

After graduation, Erin moved to Kansas City to attend Rockhurst University and Research College of Nursing, graduating in 2010 with her BS in Nursing. She moved back to Plattsmouth in 2013 to be with her soon-to-be husband who had also been raised in the area. She graduated from Maryville University in 2020 with her Master of Science in Nursing and became a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner shortly after. Finding passion in lactation/breastfeeding medicine, Erin went on to become a certified lactation counselor (CLC) in 2022.

Erin has been a practicing RN since 2010. She has experience in medical-surgical nursing as well as working at a Level 1 trauma center in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) caring for patients ranging from very healthy to very critical. She also has experience in leadership working as a charge nurse and nursing supervisor.

What is a Family Nurse Practitioner?

A Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who passed a board exam to become nationally certified in that specialty. All FNPs must practice as a registered nurse (RN) for a certain number of years before becoming eligible to advance their degree and then become licensed as an APRN. The scope of practice of any nurse practitioner (NP) varies per state. Fortunately, in the state of Nebraska, NPs have full scope of practice with no restrictions meaning they can assess, diagnose, treat, and prescribe comparably to a medical doctor (MD).

FNPs in Nebraska also have the opportunity to own and operate their own private practice. The benefits of being cared for by an NP include the promotion of excellent communication and delivering of high quality care which results in safe patient outcomes and high patient satisfaction. These benefits stem from their many years of bedside practice as RNs. There is a reason nurses have ranked the most honest and trusted professionals in the US for 19 years in a row and you can experience all the benefits of working with an FNP when you partner with Hometown Health.
